Breast cancer detection and staging are constantly evolving as technologies improve. Breast cancer surgery is also undergoing continuous refinement, with the objective being to achieve optimal cosmetic results. Surgery has been combined with intraoperative radiation therapy to achieve the best local-disease control with minimal side-effects.

Since its inception ESO has devoted special attention to breast cancer, because it is the most common cancer in women worldwide and is the field of research of its founder, Umberto Veronesi, and its Scientific Director, Alberto Costa. Over the past three decades, ESO organised many educational events and sessions on breast cancer treatment, stressing the crucial need for a multidisciplinary approach to the disease, with an active involvement of patients. InESO established a special task force for the development of international guidelines for metastatic breast cancer.
